ARCHERY OR RIFLE

A607. Cougar Hunts in Western Canada
The Thrill of an Unforgettable Chase!
Cougar - or mountain lion - are one of the most secretive creatures on the living on the face of the earth today. Even in a place such as British Columbia where cougars are plentiful, it's rare to see one of these big cats in the woods without running it with good hounds. Hunting season takes place during the winter months, it start on December 1st, ensuring that your trophy will be at the peak of winter prime for rug or lifesize mount. Hunting techniques consist of driving 4X4's and snowmobiles on the many logging roads in search of fresh cat tracks. When the right tracks are spotted the dogs are brought to the site and released on the trail of the cat; the chase begins. The dogs are exciting to follow and watch in action. When a cat is treed the hunters will note the change in their voices as the dogs' barking reaches a fevered pitch. Our area has a tremendous Lion population, it is one of the top producing cougar ranges in British Columbia. The reason for this is because of the many deer in the area. Recordbook toms have been taken from our areas over the past several years, and trophy populations are stronger than ever. Cougar may be taken by rifle or bow. We have been taking lion hunters for over 10 years and have always had a good kill ratio of about 98%. Over the last five years we have had 100% success rate. You are almost guaranteed to see a cougar in a tree, if it's the one you want, great! If not, we let it go and the search continues. This hunting adventure is an enjoyable experience, and offers great opportunity for good pictures of a live cougar.

Special Recommendations
This hunt is very physical and you might have to work hard to earn your trophy. You must practice your skills by shooting up, as in a real hunting situation. It's more likely that you will have to shoot a treed cougar. Shots are often difficult due to sharp angle and poor clearance. Some walking may be also required if rough terrain is encountered. This is an ideal hunt for archery hunters who would like to put a cat in the Pope and Young record book.
