Bowhunting Quebec-Labrador Caribou

The QuebecLabrador Caribou
With the male's weight varying between 300 and 400 pounds, the Rangifer Tarandus or "Tuktuk" is another member of the deer family. It is a gregarious animal, and always on the move. The QuebecLabrador herd is the largest in the world. The two most important groups are estimated at over 450,000 head for the famous George River Herd" and 220,000 head for the "Leaf River Herd." Like all other deer, the caribou is gifted with fine hearing and a particularly keen sense of smell. In an open area, caribou can also easily detect movements from far away.

BowhuntingCaribou Bowhunting Techniques
In northern Quebec, each bowhunter is allowed to tag two caribou, male or female. Ground stalking near paths used by these animals is one of the most practical bowhunting methods. Because most of the country is barren ground, the archer is able to locate caribou from afar. He can set up an ambush and wait for the caribou to pass by. For the true sportsman, still hunting is quite a challenge in itself. It is you who must calculate the best ambush site. Because the trees are too small, tree-stands can not be used. The bowhunters spend the entire day out in the bush, walking and stalking caribou.

Hunting Bow And Arrows
The hunting bow for taking a large trophy bull should preferably have a draw weight of 60 to 70 pounds. Any arrow aluminum, carbon or wood will do it just fine. They should be mounted with bright colored fletching only when the archer uses a "Cat Quiver" like backquiver, otherwise dark or camo fletching is better.

Broadheads
Should be 125 grains or more mounted with 2, 3 or 4 razorsharp blades.
About Primitive Hunting Point:
Except for bowhunting small game, flint hunting heads are not yet legal in Quebec

Technical Details
You don't need extra arrow speed. Unlike its cousin the whitetail deer, caribou don't jump the string
Spray feather fletchings with water-proofing like silicone
The less gadgetry you use, the less trouble you will have in the Ungava region
Although shots are often taken at close range, the archer should be able to hit his mark at 45 yards
